Over the past year, ADMIN Partners has shared a number of book reviews on all the different aspects of business. While we have enjoyed each of those reads, we wanted to change things up for August and check out a book that focused on personal development. It is our belief that building your personal development skills will better one’s life both in and out of the workplace. Lucky for us, we stumbled on the book Daring Greatly by Brené Brown and were happy to learn that this was exactly the type book we were looking for.

Brené Brown has spent years as a research professor at the University of Houston. Her focus? Courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy. These may not be your traditional studies and you may be wondering why we would choose a book from an author with these credentials. However, these aspects and how they relate to personal development are vital to how we also operate in business.

Daring Greatly is a book that challenges what we as humans think we know about vulnerability. It looks at how uncertainty and risk play into our everyday lives. From relationships to a promotion in the office, we all need to tap into our courage and be vulnerable in order to progress. Ironically, vulnerability is labeled as weakness, especially in business. Brené counters this and outlines how learning into discomfort and being vulnerable to people and experiences is actually a sign of strength.

Overall the ADMIN Team thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a refreshing take on personal and professional development. It was also gave us a generous kick of motivation to challenge ourselves and to be more courageous (aka – vulnerable) when facing new experiences going forward.
