October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month and we will be going over some general tips and reminders to keep yourself safe online! Most of us are interacting online as part of our job and our personal lives everyday, and coming into contact with possible threats. Keeping vigilant about cyber threats can help protect your workplace and personal lives. Here are some tips and reminders to keep in mind!
Making a unique password is vital, using uncommon words, numbers, and special characters to create a strong password. Changing it often also immensely helps mitigate risk. Emails are so ingrained in our daily life, but take a moment to make sure the email address is correct, and that there is no obvious spelling or grammar mistakes before opening any links. If you are unsure try reaching out to the sender directly to confirm they are the sender of the email. Making sure your data is backed up in a secure method is also extremely important.
Government agencies like CISA release information on common internet scams and how they are changing and adapting, local organizations might also have information on scams to keep an eye out for in your specific area. Another great method to add an additional layer of protection to your login is enabling multi-factor authentication on your accounts. This will allow you to verify your identity in an additional method beyond your password, making it harder for someone to hack into your accounts.
