Here at ADMIN, we are constantly working on enhancing our productivity both as a company and as individuals. For inspiration, we will often turn to things like TEDTalks and podcasts. In fact, that is why we started our podcast series here on our blog. This has also encouraged us to start a new monthly series on the blog that is dedicated to books that have influenced our team. Welcome to the Monthly Book Review.

It’s no secret that instilling good habits helps people be productive and get the most from their day. So, when we saw there was a book discussing the power of habits, we were in. People both consciously and unconsciously form what are known as ‘good’ and ‘bad’ habits. What we really wanted to know is how can we work to break a bad habit and learn how to establish better ones?

Charles Duhigg delves into the science behind habit formation and then relays that data in the form of real life circumstances that make understanding how habits are formed simple. His research explains how habits influence Target’s marketing campaigns, how the guts of Rosa Parks started a wave in the civil rights movement and even how a fire in a London Underground station in the 80’s (which lead to the death of over 30 people) changed the way the station’s procedures were managed.

While the book is not a step by step layout of how to instill better habits into one’s daily routine, it does provide a better understanding of human behaviors and how habits can impact the way we live and how we treat each other.

One thing we can’t deny is how effortless The Power of Habit is to read. Rather than being stuck staring at statistics and research studies, you get to absorb the scientific data in a much more entertaining manner. We also applaud Duhigg for his discussions on both home and work life and how habits affect both, because while we want to have habits that are advantageous in our work, we also want those favorable habits to carry into our home life as well. Without turning the book it into a self-help session, Duhigg teaches you how to be more aware of the habits you do have and how that mindfulness can help you break out of the negative cycle that poor habits can put you into.
