Upstream: The Quest To Solve Problems Before They Happen
Each and every day, we as humans face issues that present themselves. This happens both in life and in business. Pressing matters pop up throughout our days and we strategically work to resolve them to the best of our ability. Often we will do this alone and on occasion, we will work in teams to find the best solution. This is an important aspect of humanity; being able to handle the unexpected and manage curve balls helps us grow individually and as organizations. But, what if we spent less time solving problems and more time learning how we could prevent them from happening in the first place?
When we learned about the new book Upstream by Dan Heath, we knew we had to get our hands on it for our March Book Review. A highly anticipated read in the world of business books, Upstream focuses on finding a cure for the issues we face rather than dealing with the symptoms. It’s incredible to think about how much time, energy and money people spend on resolving the painstaking moments that pop up, yet a very small amount effort on determining why those things happened in the first place. So, how can we anticipate the issues and prevent them from happening?
This book takes a great look at how to examine the foundation of the problems that you or your business face and use that to prevent issues in the future. Heath uses various examples from organizations in an array of industries to prove this point. We enjoyed the interviews with different organizations and gained a better perspective on the preventative measures that can be used to avoid disasters before they happen.
